Does MOBI work on recent Kindles?+

Yes — every Kindle ever shipped, from the 1st-gen Kindle Keyboard (2007) through Paperwhite 12 (2024) and Scribe 2 (2024), still reads MOBI natively. However, Amazon retired KindleGen and the MOBI submission format on August 1, 2022 in favour of AZW3 (KF8) and EPUB via Send-to-Kindle (the new free service replacing the legacy Send-to-Kindle Email which Amazon also deprecated). For self-publishing through Kindle Direct Publishing today you should upload AZW3, EPUB or DOCX — but MOBI remains the most universally compatible format for sideloading via USB or Calibre. If your goal is sideloading to a personal device, MOBI is still the safe pick; if you're publishing for sale, use our /tools/pdf-to-azw3 ($0 free tier) or /tools/pdf-to-epub instead.

My PDF has columns (article, magazine), how does it work?+

Our AI runs a layout-detection pass that identifies column boundaries (the same approach Tesseract's LSTM engine and Adobe Acrobat Pro $19.99/mo "Reflow" mode use), then linearizes the reading order column-by-column to produce single-column flowing MOBI text — readable on the 6-inch screen of a Kindle Paperwhite without horizontal scrolling. We handle 2-column scientific journals (Nature, Cell, IEEE Transactions), 3-column magazine spreads (The Economist, National Geographic), 4-column newspaper PDFs (FT Weekend, NYT print edition) and right-to-left RTL Arabic / Hebrew PDFs natively. Footnotes are repositioned inline as Kindle pop-up notes (KindleGen INDX format), tables are converted to scrollable HTML5 tables, and equations from STEM PDFs are kept as embedded SVG images at 300 dpi — better fidelity than Calibre's open-source PDF→MOBI pipeline which often garbles 2-column layouts and renders equations as jagged 96-dpi PNGs.
