Why pick AZW3 over MOBI?+
Three concrete reasons. (1) Format support: AZW3 / KF8 (introduced October 2011 with the Kindle Fire) implements the full IDPF EPUB 3.2 CSS3 subset — flexbox callouts, drop caps, fixed-layout pages for children's books and graphic novels, embedded OpenType fonts, MathML for STEM equations and KindleGen indexed search; legacy MOBI (Mobipocket 6/7, 1996-2011) only supports a tiny CSS subset and no embedded fonts. (2) Amazon's own roadmap: KindleGen MOBI generation was retired on August 1, 2022 and Send-to-Kindle Email was deprecated alongside it — AZW3 (or EPUB) is now mandatory for new Kindle Direct Publishing submissions. (3) Device behavior: every Kindle sold since the 2011 Kindle Fire renders AZW3 with sharper hinted typography than MOBI on the same hardware, especially on the 300 ppi Paperwhite 12 and Oasis 3 screens. The only reason to still pick MOBI today is sideloading to a 1st-gen Kindle Keyboard (2007), 4th-gen Kindle Touch (2011) or Kindle DX (2009-2012) — for those use our /tools/pdf-to-mobi.
Will my AZW3 work on non-Kindle e-readers?+
AZW3 is an Amazon proprietary format wrapper sitting on top of the KF8 (Kindle Format 8) HTML5/CSS3 ebook spec — it is intentionally locked to the Kindle ecosystem (Kindle hardware, Kindle for iOS, Kindle for Android, Kindle for Mac/PC, Kindle Cloud Reader). Kobo Libra Colour, Kobo Clara, Bookeen Cybook, PocketBook InkPad, Boox Page, Boox Note Air and Tolino devices natively read EPUB and most read PDF, but none of them read AZW3 without third-party DRM-strip + format-convert workflows (Calibre + DeDRM plugin, illegal in France under L335-3-1 and in Germany under §95a UrhG, gray-zone in the US under 17 USC §1201 DMCA). For those devices use our /tools/pdf-to-epub instead — IDPF EPUB 3.2 is the universal e-reader standard accepted by every non-Kindle device shipped since 2010 and by Kindle itself via the new Send-to-Kindle web upload (which auto-converts EPUB to KF8 server-side at upload time).
